the hundred dresses

In 1944 a book called The Hundred Dresses was published by Harcourt Inc. It was written by Eleanor Estes and Illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. It has since been republished twice, currently with an introduction by Helena Estes. It is a book for children ages 6 and up that teaches kindness, compassion, and standing up for what's right. I have not read the book. But I will be buying it tomorrow!

I learned of the book through Design Mom, Gabrielle Blair, who used the book as inspiration to create a family project. Grandma draws the outlines of the dresses and sends them to her granddaughters who then use crayons, watercolors, and their imagination to color the dresses. They intend to complete one hundred dresses. Like the book.

Not only do I think these water color dresses are simply divine works of art, I am absolutely smitten with the idea of how a simple art project can bring a family together. So many of us live miles and miles from our parents and grandparents. What an incredibly unique way to bring those lives closer and actually create... together. And it doesn't have to be water color dresses.... there are endless options.

But I'm partial to the dresses. Hear that, Grandma?

I have this poster in a frame next to my bed. I bought it a year or so ago from The Wheatfield on Etsy.

And if you've been following me for any portion of my nearly four years on the world-wide web, and have just been redirected back to this blog... you might have some idea why. But just in case you missed one of my surprise moves I'm going to try to help explain the journey here. As quickly as possible so that we can move on already!

In February of 2007 I left my thriving merchandising job in corporate retail to stay home with my then 3 year old and 7 month old children. Hardest damn decision I ever had to make. But, no doubt in the world, the right one.

About a year later I started to get a tad ~~bored~~ inquisitive. A friend turned me on to blogger and within hours I had started my first blog, a "mommy blog", called and the beat goes on...

But the more time I spent surfing blogger the more I missed the fifteen years I'd spent buying, selling, designing & merchandising retail goods. It was only months before I started this blog. it's beautiful here.

And then I met Etsy. Oh, Etsy. And thus, my shop, zuzu girl handmade opened just before the end of 2008. And, you guessed it, the shop required yet another blog so zuzu girl handmade was conceived.

The last three years have been a whirlwind. A delightful, confusing, challenging, wandering whirlwind. The kids will both be in elementary school this fall, the marriage to a man I've called boyfriend, best friend and husband for the last 22 years is soon to be dissolved, and I'm headed back to the glamorous world of corporate retail.

And that brings us pretty darn close to the present. The shop will be closing in a week or two, and the blogs are being culled down. Again.

But I'm not going anywhere. I might confuse the hell out of you with all my changes but you can't get rid of me that easily. I've had far too much fun here! In fact I've *met* some of the loveliest friends through blogger, Etsy and facebook over the last three years and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

So, while I no longer have anything to sell you... I sure have lots to share with you.

I love pretty little things, vintage goodness, mid-century modern decor, stylish kids, clever crafts, everything Etsy and coffee. Oh, how I love coffee.

I hope you will join me on my continued little adventure...

a few things I kinda sorta loathe today...

1. falling asleep while trying to comfort a child to sleep... only to wake in a fog with a million things to do before I can actually go back to sleep myself.

2. going to a favorite restaurant and feeling the need to order something different off the menu... only to realize why you always order the same damn thing.

3. heartburn. especially when caused by #2.

4. foul mouthed young children. I mean way too young. and, kinda sorta, their parents.

5. coffee shop patrons that bring long lists. I lack patience. especially before my fix.

a few things that kinda make up for all the other things above...

1. a perfectly picked and ripened strawberry. just one will do it.

2. the blatant honesty of an innocent child. can't beat it. even if you don't want to hear what they have to say!

3. windows down. sun shining. and a sweet tuned cranked way up.

4. when someone holds the door open for you at a coffee shop, knowing damn well it means you will now be ahead of them in line.

5. snorty puppy stretches.

Oh, and this wooden spoon theater is super cute tonight...

Tonight I attended a pre-school fundraiser. There was a puppet show for the kids at which time the parents could either... A. join their kids on the grass to watch (not happening. not that I don't adore my kids but puppets? not so much.) B. socialize quietly in the back with other parents (definitely did some of that) C. walk around and check out other women's shoes (turns out this was the fun part!)

After sharing a few photos of a party I threw last weekend some of my facebook fans wanted to know more about the house. We will begin renovating the master bedroom and bath in the next month or so and I'll be sure to walk you through the before and after process. Trust me. The before is not pretty.

Let's cut right to the chase.

I'm closing my zuzu girl handmade Etsy shop.

Again.

There are a million and one reasons why this is a good thing. And a few reasons why it is not. But I'm convinced. Change is good.

I've got a few things up my sleeve. Which one will shake out is still to be determined but I just know it will be great. And I plan on hanging out to tell you what it is. See, I'm a serial shopper, stylist, merchandiser & blogger so I'm going nowhere. I just won't have anything to sell you personally. But now I may have a little more time to tell you where to find other good stuff or how to make it yourself. And that, my friends, is a good thing too!

I don't have an exact date yet for when our doors will shut but I can promise there won't be a fire sale. We love our merchandise far too much. I have to say, I've never been a huge fan of yellow. Never found anything wrong with it either. It's just one of those colors I never thought all that much about. Until recently. I find it appearing everywhere. And wow. Is it fun! Not sure I'm going to run out and paint my bedroom yellow but it's certainly got me thinking sunshiny thoughts...

Well, technically you can do it yourself. I actually emailed my handy (and very generous) father and asked him to do it for me but...

There are several varieties of these sold on Etsy. For a boatload of money. I fell in love with the concept but was determined not to pay that sort of money for a block of wood. And basically, that's all you need.

You can simply buy a 4x4 and sand it down or you can plane a piece of wood to your desired size, which is what my dad did. My pencil block is spray lacquered but you could paint of stain it any color you desire. Do this FIRST. If you try to paint it after the holes are drilled the paint will just drip down into the holes. Not pretty.

My dad put painters tape on one side of the wood and marked where the holes would go. He then drilled through tape. This helps eliminate any burrs or cracks around the holes. As far as drills go, a hand drill will work, but if you have a drill press that would (apparently) be a better option. I'm not terribly well informed on drills but this is what the pro told me!

Be sure to measure the items you want to place in the holes before drilling. You could use these blocks for pencils, markers, makeup brushes or even kitchen utensils. But I personally found the rainbow of pencils the most visually appealing. Now lets see how long they stay color blocked as photographed.

If you've been reading any decor blogs at all lately you are aware that Holly Becker's book is finally available. Holly is the designer behind the popular blog decor 8. One of my personal favorite haunts.

The book is currently out in limited release. I picked mine up at Anthropologie this weekend. I was a little hesitant to drop $35 on a design book until I opened it. And it didn't take but a moment before I was sold. All 271 pages are truly inspirational. Beautiful from start to finish.

March 28th. It's almost April. I love April. It's one of my two favorite months in Northern California. The sun comes out. The house heats up. And Spring is served.

As I sit and celebrate the sunshine I'm also having so much fun looking at these indoor slide photos on ohdeedoh. Why? Nah, not because they look super fun. Which I'm sure they are. But because if we had one of these slides in my house I'm quite confident that I would use it more than either of the children. I'm just giddy over the efficiency!

Apparently the tooth fairy has her own door at This Blessed Nest. My children would be quite jealous to learn this and six teeth later I'm afraid it may be too late to introduce it. Loving this reclaimed wood vanity table. It's a DIY project that seemed rather daunting at first but the more I stared longingly at it the more accessible it became. And hey, I might actually apply make-up if I had a cute little table like this to sit at. Or not. But it sure sounds like a good excuse for a new project. Right? Taking a deep breath before closing the week tonight. Last night I went to bed around midnight having just seen the devastating news of the tsunami in Japan. Much was still unknown at the time but we knew it was going to be bad. I woke 6.5 restless hours later with a text message on my phone. It began, "Don't want to wake you if you're still in bed. There is a tsunami warning for the west coast..." Not really the way I'd planned on beginning my day. But, as we all know now, the San Francisco Bay remains unscathed. And for that, I feel grateful.

I received two more heartbreaking electronic messages over the next few hours. But I went about my business, because, as I understand it, that is just what one does. Now tonight I sit with a heavy heart and a deep compassion for so many different people across the world. Some that I know and love dearly. Others that I will never have the chance to know. And again. I feel grateful.

But it's Friday. And that alone is certainly worth a small celebration. And a nod to just a few of the brighter parts of my week...

Like the Martha Stewart fringe centerpiece (pictured above) and found here yesterday. Coincidentally only one day after I stripped our Thankful Tree (yes, I am aware that it is March) and left it barren by the front door. Bet you can't guess what I'm going to do to it next!

Or my dear friend, Lisa's Fat Tuesday celebration. And the oh so comical hunt for the sugar baby that ensued.

And then there was this. A spontaneous dinner theater performed for me tonight. Turns out a little tootie tata & boom de atta was just what I needed.

I just stumbled upon Spirithoods on Design Mom's Blog. There she posed the question to her readers, "Chic or strange?" Now, I don't know about you, but the only thing I find strange about this are the people that answered strange! (That exclamation point was strategically placed and dedicated to a dear friend. You know who you are.)

I am in LOVE with these hoodies. And so are my kids. At $99.00 a pop I'm thinking Christmas... but I might have to buy them now and wear them around the house myself when the kids are at school. Just not sure how the dog would react.

They are available for both boys and girls, are made domestically of only faux animal fur, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to several non-profit organizations dedicated to wildlife conservation.

I'd never heard of the term either until I came across this post on facebook today. And I fell in love. Apparently there is an entire constituency of creative folks that make a habit of "yarn bombing" random city fixtures. This subway work was done by the very talented ishknits. I only wish I'd had that seat when I was riding the N & R back and forth to midtown Manhattan a dozen or so years ago. (Oh, and that she's come and yarn bomb our house next!)

The weather forecasters said we were getting snow this weekend. "Snowstorm picks up speed, bears down on Bay Area" was one of the headlines on Thursday. First time since 1976 they touted.

The kids were psyched. Hell, I was psyched. So, I did what every other person expecting snow at their home for the first time would do. I stocked up the fridge, filled up the gas tank, bought some new jewelry supplies (I can throw that in so that I have an excuse right?), cleaned the backyard of dog poop (no brown snowballs!), and covered the pool. And then, we waited. And waited. And waited. First, buckets of rain. Then? 55 and sunny. For two. Days. Straight.

So, here I sit. No snow. But a passion for color. The great antithesis.

At least one of these items is definitely coming to our house. If the mailman can deliver through all that powder...

So... I'm planning on renovating our pitifully small master bath and reorganizing the cupboard size closet that currently holds 15 years worth of unworn clothing this Spring. On a budget of well, next to nothing. It's going to be one of those DIY, hire a handyman or call dad for the rough stuff remodels. But damn is it nice to have inspiration like this! What I would do for a shoe wall. This one belongs to Jane Keltner De Valle and the photos are courtesy of The Coveteur. Heck, my entire closet isn't even as big as this wall.

I still have our Thankful Tree up by the front door. We made it for Thanksgiving. It's now February (in case you also live in Northern California and seem to be also stumped by the 72 and sunny weather). It's just so darn pretty I haven't been able to take it down. But now I'm thinking maybe I can transform it. To a photograph / kid's art project / awards tree? Creepy or cute? Art or excess?

Today we decided to try out a new sugar cookie recipe. Not like sugar cookies vary much from one to another but hey, it was an excuse to buy a few new cookie cutters and break out the sugar.

In this first photo, the dough has been made and is in the refrigerator cooling. We have all the cutters and decorations ready to go. This might very well have been the longest thirty minutes of Zuzu's life.

{Note to self. Although Zuzu really and truly loves to participate in mixing the batter, it is simply not worth the time and Gage could care less about the batter. Next time, prepare dough while kids are at school. They should cut & decorate only.}

Zuzu can barely contain herself but at least we're jamming to her newly acquired CD from her Performing Arts class yesterday....

A little zippity do dah never hurts to bide the time and brighten the spirits...

And finally... we've got COOKIES! More cookies than we know what to do with actually. But they are scrumdiddlyumptious. And I don't care in the least bit that that's not a word. Zuzu's favorites were the daisies and the dresses. Gage loved the skull & crossbones and the "guitar" which was really a violin because they were out of guitars... and then Zuzu kept calling it a cello because they learned about the difference between guitars & cellos in school this week. Details. Details.

We were pretty sure it was time to wrap up the cookie decorating adventure when Zuzu started sucking the frosting directly from the squeeze bottles. Not pretty.

You can find the recipe for our yummy sugar cookies on my dear friend Lisa's fabulous foodie blog. She is a whiz in the kitchen and my cookies will never compare to hers but we do what we can, right? We also go to her house a lot. Here's another cookie post with pictures of her kids and mine making cookies.

A couple side notes to her recipe:

For the frosting we used a simple mixture of milk (just a wee bit) & confectioners sugar. And a little blue & red (pink) food coloring. Also, the cookies with the custom words stamped into them are courtesy of William's Sonoma. I bought the kit just before Christmas. Not sure if they still have them but they were super cute. Zuzu wrote, "ZUZU ROCKS", "HAPPY MOMMY", and "I LOVE YOU GAGE". These could be really special if you were making cookies for an actual occasion (unlike us)!

And now, my 5 hour saga ends. Dish washer is humming and cookies are ready to be wrapped and stored for tomorrow. And my sugar rush is fading fast so I best move quickly!

I know I've blogged about them before but when I saw these silver and gold clogs by Sven on their website tonight I just about knocked the bulldoggie off the sofa. Granted, at $78 they are far too expensive for a child that needs to shoes every six months, but STILL. I mean, how much do I wish I could wear them? Or any of the darling items pictured above for that matter. Why is it that I wouldn't wear anything from JCrew myself but I could fill Zuzu's closet with it? (If I felt it reasonable to throw money away on a 4 year old's attire when she's perfectly happy wearing hand me downs and two year old, too short jeans.) Hmmmm, maybe it's because I don't wear silk, ruffles or flowers. But maybe I should...

Army green messenger bag by Christy Studio on Etsy. And no I don't just adore it because her name is Christy. Although that doesn't hurt. I love how big it is while still being stylish. The straps are adjustable and just wait until you get a load of all the inside pockets. Gadget heaven I tell you.

I don't do much cooking but man do I cut. And this shop has some of the most spectacular little cutting boards and trays I've ever seen. Love the feet and the rich grains in their wood. These little lovelies, perfect for wedding or hostess gifts, would make a great statement piece on the counter. No need to hide this baby in the corner.

I need to know. Who is this thirsty?? It's the super big gulp of coffee. No sense holding the whip on one of these!

It's the Starbucks Trenta. I honestly don't get it but this image circulating the web that compares the cup to a human stomach certainly entertained me this week (and, mind you, this is coming from a self-professed Starbucks addict.)

I just thank goodness the Trenta is only being offered for cold drinks or I might be tempted to try it. But I like my coffee HOT. And in a grande size, reusable, insulated, personal cup.

Dr. Seuss really was a remarkable man. This is one of my favorite new Seussisms I found last night on google. Can't for the life of me figure out what book it is from but I love it ever still...

Valentine hearts garland. Made from stiffened fabric, the complete tutorial can be found here on How About Orange. The stiffened fabric concept is a new one to me but it seems fairly straight forward and the effect is marvelous. Love her fabric choices too. Delightful.

I'm thinking that if you wanted to turn this into a project for the kiddos you could probably just use paper and a stapler. They won't be quite so delicate but the fun factor would definitely be there!

Cutest. Apron. Ever.

It was given to Zuzu as a Christmas present this year. I meant to blog about it immediately but then it got tucked away and shipped with all the other presents. And I had a few other things going on. But then this morning she carried it out to help me make the chocolate chip pancakes (breakfast of champions).

Needless to say, if I had more time (and a whole lot more talent) I'd be knocking this off in my size to match. It came from a company called Cupcakes and Cartwheels which is owned by another company called Two's Company. Their website has been under construction since I first looked on Christmas day but you can certainly keep checking!

Our pancakes were fantastic.
And the apron is still clean.

A friend of mine emailed me today for some ideas for her kid's class projects on Valentines Day. What? Valentine's Day? Today is only 1.11.11. Yup. All ones.

But then I quickly remembered how much fun homemade valentines are so I started scouring my bloggy archives for some ideas. I found a few which I quickly posted on my Facebook page. Like this yummy cookie decorating project. Or these upcycled heart shaped crayons. And then there were these fun friendship bracelets and mad lib valentines.

But since we've already made most of these in our home, I needed something new. So I kept looking. Then I found these paper flowers that you can inscribe with messages on Martha's website.

I think this could be a great Valentine for the kids to give their friends. We could use all different color paper (my seven year old son would not go for the standard pink & red) and use pipe cleaners for the stems. They could write sentimental messages... or silly ones. Or both.

Or the kids could make these at school to bring home to their parents. That would do a little heart string tugging now wouldn't it? Well, assuming the sentiments were sweet.

I'll try some kiddie style flowers out and photograph them for you in a few days. And we'll have more homemade valentine ideas come your way soon.

friday favorites

I'm not quite sure when the moustache took over retail but it certainly hasn't seemed to let up. Not even a hair. These moustache straws are a DIY version. How much fun would my kids and their friends have with them? So. Much. Fun.

I actually have a love/hate relationship with this poster. Part of me finds it completely and utterly offensive to overweight children. The other part of me can't stop laughing my jiggly ass off.

I'm still not sure what I enjoyed more about this movie. The acting or the cinematography. It is brilliant and beautiful. There were so many moments that I just wanted to stop the frame and stare at the screen. Especially the scenes in Lionel's office. The wall behind Bertie's chair, designed to exemplify it's seemingly peculiar resident, is undeniably exquisite. Oh, and then there were the clothes...

I'm not playing favorites here by only showing one of my beautiful children, but my little girl's first words this morning (after waking up next to me... which is NOT good) just melted my heart.

"I love my life right now," she said. Breathless I tell you. I asked my wise beyond her years four year old to embellish and she sat for a good three minutes rattling off all the parts of her little life that she adores. Including taking the dog to the vet. I am truly blessed.

I am totally starting a 2011 jar this week and thinking maybe we should double back and create one for 2010 as well. Lord knows we have enough stuff laying around this house to fill it. My only concern is that the kids won't be able to actually edit what goes in it. They are so fond of "treasures" that our jar might be filled by Valentine's Day!

As we say goodbye to 2010, and I get ready to write my first blog post of 2011, I look back to some of our favorite discoveries of last year. Random. But all cool. Enjoy!...

1. hanky pankys ~ one size fits all. one size fits great. expensive. but worth it. thongs, boy shorts, camis. you name it. I wear it.

2. stand up paddle boarding ~ best full body workout I've ever experienced in my life. although I may need to move to a tropical island because in northern california it's not necessarily a year round sport.

3. dottie angel ~ talented artist, blogger & business woman. serious girl crush going on here.

4. blokus ~ 2-4 players. any age. this game rocks.

5. gelish ~ thirty minutes in the chair and you can reach into your wallet to pay as soon as you're done? and THEN you can wear a manicure that looks brand spanking for at least two weeks? um, hell yeah!

6. perler fuse beads ~ cheapest babysitter ever. easier for little hands than grown up ones but fun for parents too.

7. bob schneider ~ might have to move to austin for this guy. can I paddle board there?

8. yuba mundo ~ my 40th birthday present. to myself. ride alone, with one kid. or two. pack up the gear and go. this bike rocks.

9. kindle - we were a little late to the game here but you know what they say. one kindle for the family. free kindle downloads to the laptop and the iphone. we're reading machines.

This is a great rainy or snowy day activity. Or just something to fill the down time. It's pretty self explanatory but I do have two points of advice. 1. Have them color in their hair first. It gives them better perspective on where to draw the face. 2. Do not cut out the body until after they are finished. Ballerina tutus do not fit on already cut out bodies. Trust me. We learned the hard way.

Now if only I'd photographed the finished product...

As a Montessori "graduate" the last thing I ever expected to see out of this natural approach to learning was... an iphone app? Say it ain't so! But I'm kinda glad it is.

I allow my kids to play video games. Everything in moderation is basically my life's mantra and that applies to their time as well. We play plenty of sports, read, color, dance, sing and play far more board games than any mother should be required to. But we also (gasp) watch our fair share of television and play video games. I have no problem with that. Except, of course, when your child gets off a six hour plane ride and into a car with an iphone then proceeds to vomit all over herself as you are approaching a bridge from the motion sickness.

True story. Happened yesterday.

But I digress. My kids can kick my butt in most of the apps on my iphone and the only xbox "game" I can win is Dance Central (boy were they surprised to see mom throw down some moves!). But it is certainly refreshing to finally see some apps that actually TEACH. These Montessorium games are so visually appealing that my seven year old grabbed the phone immediately and started tracing his letters (which is clearly a little rudimentary for him).

I bought both the intro to letters and intro to math for my phone. Zuzu had fun with them for about ten minutes but I'm afraid they came out about a year too late. She'll still play them, and I think the directional letter & number tracing can even be beneficial for my seven year old, but these apps are definitely best for 2-3 year olds. And, in my humble digitally inclined opinion, worth the $4.99.

There is also an app called Alpha Writer (pictured above) which looks super cool, and probably more age appropriate for Zuzu, but it's available only for the ipad. If you have one, check it out and report back!

We've been on a lovely vacation for that last two weeks. And while my genetic makeup does not allow me to completely stop designing, sourcing, blogging, or networking while on vacation, I have to say...
I really, truly tried.

Sleeping in. Skipping showers. Laughing with friends for three hours over dinner. Spoiling the kids. Laying by the pool. (Who does that anymore?!) And eating ice cream. Every. Single. Night.

Oh wait, I do that at home too.

Nevertheless, I was sad to leave but so excited to curl up in my own bed tonight and hit my desk in the morning. I have so many new ideas for you. Just bear with me while I execute them all. Sometimes my brilliant talent of multi-tasking does not work in my favor.

Like when I start 18 projects at once.

In the meantime, this is the little ditty I can't get out of my head tonight. I'm not a particular fan of rap music (to say the least) but I do love this song. And it's fitting.

I posted one of these images on my Facebook page last night so forgive me if this is overkill but I just can't stop staring at these Janet Hill images on my screen. I ordered the reproduction below for my bedroom earlier this year and I just adore it. She just exudes femininity. And to make her even more appealing, although very well packaged, my print arrived torn at the corner thanks to the gentle handling of the lovely little postal service. No questions asked, Janet replaced my copy immediately. Now that's class. And style.

Serious interior design envy going on today. I want to live in this room. Like NOW. And I want to fly to Denmark and apply for a job at house doctor. But that can probably wait until just after Christmas.

Their taste is impeccable. How is it that I've just discovered them today? I do wish their website was a tad easier for me to manipulate so that I could see closer and possibly even order some of their fabulous products. But maybe it is and I'm just being impatient.
